Choosing Your First Commercial Inflatable: Complete Beginner's Guide
Quick Answer
Your first commercial inflatable should be a 13×13 standard commercial bounce house, priced $1,200–$2,000, with an 18 oz. PVC construction and a 1 HP continuous-duty blower included. This unit fits every backyard, every venue, and every age group — which maximizes your booking opportunity and minimizes your risk while you build your customer base and reputation.
🎯 Key Takeaways
- Start with a 13×13 bounce house — it's the most requested size in virtually every market
- Spend $1,500–$2,000 on your first unit — below this range you get residential-grade equipment that won't last
- Order your first unit at least 4–6 weeks before your target launch date to allow for shipping and practice setup
- Complete 2–3 free or discounted practice setups before your first paying customer — speed and efficiency on setup day matters
- Calculate your break-even: at $200 per rental, a $1,800 bounce house pays for itself in 9 bookings
What to Buy: The Decision Matrix
Three viable options for your first purchase: (1) Standard 13×13 bounce house — lowest cost, highest demand, easiest to transport and set up, (2) 13×20 combo bounce house with slide — higher price ($1,800–$2,500) but commands higher rental rates and appeals to more age groups, (3) Wet/dry combo — seasonal flexibility, appealing to summer clients, but adds setup complexity. For most beginners, the 13×13 standard bouncer is the correct choice: it simplifies your first season while you learn the operational side of the business.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to set up a bounce house alone?
An experienced solo operator sets up a 13×13 bounce house in 20–30 minutes. Your first setup will take 45–60 minutes while you learn the layout and staking process. Practice on your own property 2–3 times before your first customer delivery. Teardown is faster — typically 15–20 minutes once you learn the efficient rolling and compression technique.
Do I need a business license to rent bounce houses?
In most states, yes. You need at minimum a DBA (doing business as) registration and a business bank account to separate personal and business finances. Many counties and cities also require a general business license. Some states specifically regulate inflatable amusement device operators with annual inspection requirements. Check your state's department of labor and your county clerk's office for specific requirements in your area.
